Unintended Consequences: How Qualification Constrains Innovation
نویسنده
چکیده
The development and implementation of new materials and manufacturing processes for aerospace application is often hindered by the high cost and long time span associated with current qualification procedures. The data requirements necessary for material and process qualification are extensive and often require millions of dollars and multiple years to complete. Furthermore, these qualification data can become obsolete for even minor changes to the processing route. This burden is a serious impediment to the pursuit of revolutionary new materials and more affordable processing methods for air vehicle structures. The application of integrated computational materials engineering methods to this problem can help to reduce the barriers to rapid insertion of new materials and processes. By establishing predictive capability for the development of microstructural features in relation to processing and relating this to critical property characteristics, a streamlined approach to qualification is possible. This paper critically examines the advantages and challenges to a modeling-assisted qualification approach for aerospace structural materials. An example of how this approach might apply towards the emerging field of additive manufacturing is discussed in detail.

Modular-E: an Elaboration Tolerant Approach to the Ramification and Qualification Problems
We describe Modular-E (ME), a specialized, model-theoretic logic for narrative reasoning about actions, able to represent non-deterministic domains involving concurrency, static laws (constraints) and indirect effects (ramifications). We give formal results which characterizeME ’s high degree of modularity and elaboration tolerance, and show how these properties help to separate out, and provid...
متن کاملGeneral Assessment: Is Innovation being Leashed?
The slightly modified title (Un/Leashing) reflects the prevailing paradigm underlined at several occasions during the Leipzig 2010 Forum. Transport innovations can have both the public and private sectors as promoters of innovative practices, but on occasions, more common on the public side, they can act as impediments to innovation, willingly (through regulations) or unwillingly (through unint...
متن کاملSome Multidimensional Unintended Consequences of Telehealth Utilization: A Multi-Project Evaluation Synthesis
Background Telehealth initiatives have bloomed around the globe, but their integration and diffusion remain challenging because of the complex issues they raise. Available evidence around telehealth usually deals with its expected effects and benefits, but its unintended consequences (UCs) and influencing factors are little documented. This study aims to explore, describe and analyze mult...
متن کاملComing in from the cold: The psychological micro-foundations of radical innovation revisited
Radical innovation poses a series of well-documented adaptive behavioral challenges for individuals, organizations, and organizational collectives. Drawing on the insights of recent advances in the social neurosciences, the authors demonstrate how theory and research rooted in the cold cognition era of human psychology has laid micro-foundations for practices purporting to help address these ch...
متن کاملThe Social Efficiency of Fairness
Property rights provide incentives to create information but they also provide incentives to hoard it prior to the award of protection. All-or-nothing rights, in particular, limit prior sharing. An unintended consequence is to slow, not hasten, forward progress when innovation hinges on combining disparately owned private ideas. In response, we propose a solution based on a reward definition of...
